Other Voices Women's Reading Series

This month's featured reader will be
Alicja Mann.

Alicja was born and educated in Poland and immigrated to the United States in 1972. Formerly a scientist and translator, she now devotes her time to writing. She is the author of the book, Looking at the World Twice: Essays and Poems on Identity, Belonging and Otherness, a work which explores her experience reconciling two cultures.

Alison Deming, Boyer Rickel and Pam Uschuk

Join us for an inspiring night of poetry with three eminent Tucson poets,
 Alison Deming, Boyer Rickel and Pam Uschuk.


Alison Deming will read from her new poetry collection, Rope (Penguin, $18.00).  She is the author of two other volumes of poetry and three nonfiction books.  Her honors include two fellowships from the National Endowment of the Arts, a Pushcart Prize and the Gertrude B. Clayton Award.  She is currently a professor of creative writing at the University of Arizona
Boyer Rickel will read from his new chapbook, reliquary (Seven Kitchens Press).  He is the author of two earlier poetry collections and a book of autobiographical essays.  He won a National Endowment for the Arts poetry fellowship and he teaches in the Creative Writing Program at the University of Arizona. 
Pam Uschuk will read from her new collection, Crazy Love (Wings Press, $16.00).  She is the author of three volumes of poetry.  She has won numerous awards, been nominated for a Pulitzer Prize, and her work has been translated into nearly a dozen languages.

Biblio-Biography Workshop with Penelope Starr: in two sessions.
Start: 1:00 pm

Record the story of your life using the books you love.  This two session workshop explores how our lives have been shaped by the books we’ve read.  In the process of this exploration, we will each create an autobiographical bibliography.  Workshop facilitator Penelope Starr is a performance and visual artist, as well as the founder and producer of Odyssey Storytelling.

All ages welcome.  $26 for both sessions.
Advance registration and prepayment required. 
Limited to 12 participants. Call or come by to register.

Young Adult Author's Benefit for Owl & Panther.

Join us for a fabulous event for kids, teachers, librarians, and aspiring authors to benefit an incredible organization.*


•Robin Brande will read from Fat Cat (Knopf, $16.99), a funny, thoughtful novel that explores how girls feel about their bodies, and the ways they can take care of their most precious resource: themselves.
• Juanita Havill will read from Grow: A Novel in Verse (Peachtree, $14.95).  This novel, written from the perspective of 12-year old Kate, shows how an inner-city community garden brings neighbors together.
• Marge Pellegrino will read from Journey of Dreams (F. Lincoln, $15.95).  A modern-day Underground Railroad during conflict in Guatemala forms the center of this wonderful and stirring novel told from the viewpoint of a 13-year-old Mayan girl.
• Janni Lee Simner will read from her novel, Bones of Faerie (Random House, $16.99).  The war between humanity and Faerie has devastated both sides.  When 15-year-old Liza discovers she has the Faerie ability to see into the past and future, she finds what may be the key to healing both worlds.
• Jennifer Stewart will read from her novel, Close Encounters of a Third-World Kind (Holiday House, $6.95).  When 12-year old Annie's father announces that the family will be spending the next two months in Nepal on a medical mission, Annie’s not so sure about this adventure. But when she meets Nirmala, a girl close to her own age, the real adventure begins.


*  20% of the sales from this event will go to Owl & Panther, a group that helps those affected by trauma through creative writing and counseling.  Owl and Panther especially seeks to treat trauma associated with torture, dislocation, refugee status, or family problems.
